Art books: an Introduction by Emily Hylard

Tuesday's meeting of the Victorian Bookbinders’ Guild included an introduction to the world of book arts by book arts enthusiast Emily Hylard. Emily discussed and shared her collection of books by Australian and international artists, many of which were in surprising and unexpected shapes.
A number of the books exemplified the key principle of book arts, which is to use the entire book structure to communicate its story. Common structures used in book arts include the flag book, tunnel book, carousel book and the use of Platonic solids.
Book arts is a great entry point to making books for those who might not feel ready to attempt traditional book binding techniques such as those used to make codex books. The evening ended with attendees looking more closely at the range of books on display and it was pleasing to hear many attendees comment on finding new inspiration for their future book projects.
