Membership of the Victorian Bookbinders Guild runs from 1st July to 30th June each year. Membership forms can be completed online or downloaded and emailed to the Secretary. Annual membership is $60 for a single membership.

Japanese Stab Binding Workshop - Saturday 16 August 2025

Join us for an exciting new workshop focused on traditional Japanese bound books. If you love working with beautiful papers, you'll want to join this half day workshop. Instructor, Emily Hylard, will guide you in this hands-on workshop to produce two Japanese style bound books. Non-members and beginning bookbinders are welcome.

Workshop participants will:
  • Learn the Japanese 4 hole stabbinding method and produce 2 books - 1 small book 6cm x 11 cm and 1 medium book 12.5cm x 18.5 cm;
  • Learn about a range of Japanese bookbinding styles:
    • Four-hole binding (yotsume toji),
    • Hemp leaf binding (asa-no-ha toji),
    • Yamato binding (Yamato toji),
    • Accordian and Flutter (sempu-yo) books
    • and, Edo style ledger (Daifuku cho);
  • Learn how to incorporate additional Japanese bookbinding methods to give added support to the 4 hole binding, such as incorporation of an internal binding and corner supports for the book pages;
  • Gain enough experience and confidence to repeat the book making process independently at home with provided workshop notes and instructions.
